Snow removal cost: per season vs. per push
Short answer
Per-push snow removal charges for each qualifying service; a seasonal contract charges for a defined winter service package. Compare seasonal price divided by the equivalent per-push price, then check caps and extras. Published examples below include US$75–$150 for standard-driveway removal in a US cost guide and C$485–$535 plus HST for single/double seasonal driveways at one Canadian provider. These are different scopes, not interchangeable national rates.
A snow-removal contract can look cheap until the first storm reveals that the sidewalk, street-plow windrow or salt is extra. The real comparison is what gets cleared, when the crew comes and how often the quoted price applies.
This guide covers residential driveways, not commercial parking lots or roof snow removal. Prices are source-specific planning references. US dollars and Canadian dollars stay separate; local snowfall, driveway dimensions, access and service terms matter more than a headline average.
1. Published snow-removal prices: read the scope
| Reference | Published price | What it actually describes |
|---|---|---|
| US: Fixr cost guide, updated January 2025 | US$75–$150 | Removal from a standard driveway; its US$125 example covers up to six inches. Not a current local contractor offer. |
| Canada: Pierce Hill, 2026–27 single driveway | C$485 + HST; C$548.05 shown with tax | One provider's seasonal price. Driveway size is subject to confirmation; service terms must be checked separately. |
| Canada: Pierce Hill, 2026–27 double driveway | C$535 + HST; C$604.55 shown with tax | Extended and other driveway sizes are quoted individually. Not a Canada-wide rate. |
The cited provider's pricing page does not establish the snowfall trigger, number of included visits or salt coverage. Ask for the full contract. A single published seasonal price cannot prove that unlimited snow removal normally costs that amount in your city.
2. Seasonal vs. per-push break-even
For genuinely identical service, divide the seasonal fee by the per-push fee. As an illustration—not a market quote—an $800 season and $50 per push break even at 16 billed visits. At 10 visits the per-push total is $500; at 20 it is $1,000. Use the same currency and tax basis for both options.
Count billed visits, not just snowstorms
A long storm may require more than one pass. A contract may count each pass separately, or include them within an event. Drifting, a street-plow return and sub-trigger snow may be handled differently. The arithmetic only works once those terms match.
A seasonal plan buys budget predictability for the defined service, not certainty about weather. A capped plan can still create extra invoices in a snowy winter. Per-push pricing may suit occasional backup, but confirm whether service is automatic or only supplied when you request it.
3. The snow-contract checklist
- Season start/end dates, including treatment of early or late storms.
- Snowfall trigger, where accumulation is measured, and how much snow a priced visit covers.
- Automatic dispatch versus on-request service; response window rather than an assumed exact arrival time.
- Included visits or snowfall cap, deep-snow tiers, repeat passes and charges beyond the cap.
- Driveway dimensions, sidewalks, steps, windrows, salting, sanding and ice-only events.
- Where snow will be stored, and whether hauling or blocked-access returns cost extra.
- Tax, payment schedule, cancellation/refund terms, property-damage procedure and insurance.
Photograph the driveway and mark obstacles as agreed with the provider before snow covers them. Confirm who moves parked cars and whether a blocked driveway means a missed service or a return charge. For rental property, make sure the cleared areas meet your actual access needs; the contract does not decide local owner or tenant obligations.
4. Ask for comparable options in writing
Send this before signing a snow contract
- 1.“Please quote seasonal and per-push service for the same driveway and walkway areas, with tax shown separately.”
- 2.“What accumulation triggers a visit, how are repeat passes counted, and what caps or deep-snow surcharges apply?”
- 3.“Are salt, street-plow windrows and return visits included? Please list exclusions and response expectations.”
- 4.“Please confirm season dates, cancellation terms and the price after any service limit is reached.”
The one thing to remember
Buy defined service, not an unlimited-sounding label
Compare your actual per-visit cost against the season price only after triggers, areas and extras match. A predictable bill and the lowest possible bill are different goals.
Want a second set of eyes on it?
Upload a photo or PDF of the bill or quote, or paste the text. You'll get a plain-English assessment of whether the price looks normal, what stands out, and what to ask next.
Common questions
Is seasonal snow removal cheaper than paying per push?
Only when your comparable per-push total exceeds the seasonal fee after caps and extras. Calculate the break-even visit count from your own quotes; no plan is cheapest for every winter.
Does a seasonal snow-removal contract include unlimited visits?
Not necessarily. Check visit or snowfall limits, season dates, repeat passes and exceptional-storm terms. The word seasonal alone does not define coverage.
Is salting included in snow plowing?
Do not assume so. Ask whether de-icing material and application are included, billed per visit or triggered separately during ice-only conditions.
