HVAC replacement is one of the most common household purchases where buyers have no reference price. Equipment costs are reasonably knowable; installation is where quotes diverge most.

Equipment vs installation split
Ask for the equipment price and the installation price separately. If installation is a large multiple of equipment for a straight swap, that deserves an explanation.
Model numbers and efficiency
A quote should name the exact furnace and coil/condenser models. Efficiency ratings change the price materially, so comparisons only work model to model.
Ductwork and venting
New venting, a line-set replacement or duct modifications are real costs. They should be described, not bundled into a round number.
Rebates and financing
Utility or manufacturer rebates are often available. Financing 'at 0%' is frequently priced into the quote itself.
Questions worth asking
- What are the exact model numbers for the furnace, coil and condenser?
- What is the equipment cost and what is the labour cost?
- Is the existing line set being reused or replaced, and why?
- Does the price include permit, disposal and a start-up/commissioning report?
- What rebates am I eligible for, and who files them?
- What happens to the price if I choose a lower efficiency tier?
Common questions
Why do HVAC quotes vary so much?
Because they bundle equipment, labour, materials, warranty and overhead into a single number, and each company weights those differently. Two quotes for the 'same' furnace can legitimately differ once venting and duct work are included.
Should I replace the furnace and AC together?
Sometimes — matched systems can be more efficient and installing at once saves labour. But it doubles the purchase, so it should be a choice you make, not an assumption baked into the quote.
