Ice dam removal and prevention cost
Short answer
Fixr publishes a US$600–$1,800 ice-dam removal range; Toronto's AUK Roofers posts C$400–$1,200 for steam removal depending on size and access. Treat these as attributed references, not guaranteed local prices. Roof repairs, wet insulation, interior damage and prevention work may be separate. Compare the removal method, affected eaves, hourly minimum and active-leak response before judging the total.
An ice dam at the roof edge can trap meltwater and lead to leakage. Paying to remove it addresses the immediate obstruction; it does not necessarily repair roof damage or stop the conditions that created it.
This guide helps you read a removal or prevention quote. It is not a roof assessment or DIY procedure. Stay off icy roofs, keep clear of falling ice and seek qualified help for active leaks or dangerous conditions.
1. What professional ice-dam removal can cost
| Reference | Published price | Compare this scope |
|---|---|---|
| US: Fixr, January 2025 cost guide | US$600–$1,800 | Removal estimate; its US$1,200 example is three hours at a traditional two-story home of about 1,500 sq. ft. |
| Canada: AUK Roofers, Toronto/GTA | C$400–$1,200 steam removal | Small accessible single-eave dams through larger multi-eave/three-storey access. Tax inclusion is not specified. |
| Canada: AUK active-leak add-on | C$400–$650 tarp-and-secure | Posted as additional work when water is entering; not a complete interior restoration price. |
Fixr's higher-end US$4,000 example includes heating coils as well as removal. Do not use that as a removal-only comparison or a standalone prevention quote. Cost-guide numbers and one contractor's posted prices do not establish a market-wide rate.
2. Steam method, minimum time and access
AUK describes using steam and avoiding sharp-tool chipping. That is the provider's method claim, not a universal warranty guarantee. Ask the contractor which equipment and method it will use and how it protects your roof system, flashing and gutters. Low-pressure steam and a high-pressure washer are not interchangeable descriptions.
- Which eaves and roof sections are included, and is snow removal needed for access?
- Is the quote fixed-price or hourly, with what minimum, crew size, travel fee and emergency surcharge?
- Are access equipment, property protection, photos and cleanup included?
- What result ends the visit, and how is more work authorized if another dam is discovered?
- Are leak containment and temporary protection included, or separately priced?
Do not turn a pricing guide into roof instructions
Do not climb onto an icy roof or attack the ice with an axe, hammer or other sharp tool. Ask a qualified roofer about the actual roof and safe removal. Avoid assuming that a chemical product, heat cable or online method is compatible with every roof material and warranty.
3. Removal is not water-damage repair
If water has entered, request separate findings for roofing/flashing repairs, wet insulation, drying and interior reconstruction. A clear eave does not prove the roof is watertight or hidden materials are dry. Preserve photos and invoices, and ask your insurer about documentation and coverage without assuming reimbursement.
There is no single verified repair allowance that can be added to every removal visit. Damage location and extent must be assessed. Ask whether the removal company performs the other work or whether separate trades and estimates are needed.
4. What long-term prevention should address
The US Department of Energy explains that heat reaching the roof deck can melt snow, which refreezes at the colder eaves. Good air sealing, adequate insulation and suitable ventilation can reduce that heat transfer and ice-dam formation. This supports a building-envelope assessment, not a promise that adding vents or insulation alone will solve every roof.
| Proposed prevention | Ask for the reason | Keep the scope clear |
|---|---|---|
| Air sealing and insulation | Where is heat escaping, and what is the existing condition? | Specify access, penetrations addressed, insulation work and handling of wet materials. |
| Ventilation corrections | What roof/attic assembly is present and why is this change appropriate? | Specify intake/exhaust work and compatibility with the assembly. |
| Eaves membrane or heat cables | Is this damage protection or active management rather than a cure for heat leakage? | Identify product, installation, electrical work, operating costs and maintenance. |
The sources here do not establish one reliable US/Canadian price for complete prevention. Ask for a separate measured quote after assessment, not an invented flat allowance. A reroofing membrane project, attic sealing and a heat-cable installation are different scopes.
Ask this before approving the visit
An ice-dam quote request
- 1.“Please specify the affected roof sections, removal method and fixed price or hourly minimum, including tax and emergency fees.”
- 2.“Is snow clearing, access equipment and temporary leak protection included? Please list roof and interior repair exclusions.”
- 3.“Please document what was removed and any damage observed, without treating removal as a complete repair.”
- 4.“For prevention, please provide a separate assessment and scope showing which cause each proposed measure addresses.”
The one thing to remember
Remove the obstruction; investigate the cause
Urgent removal, damage repair and prevention each need their own scope. The cheapest removal cannot establish the best long-term plan.

Common questions
How much does steam ice-dam removal cost?
Toronto provider AUK posts C$400–$1,200 depending on dam size and access. The US Fixr removal guide publishes US$600–$1,800 across removal jobs. Check your contractor's method, hours, minimum and scope rather than combining these into one rate.
Does ice-dam removal include fixing a roof leak?
Not automatically. Removal clears ice; temporary protection, roof repairs, wet insulation and interior restoration may be separate. Ask for the exact included result and repair exclusions.
Will more attic insulation prevent ice dams?
Insulation may be part of the response, but heat leakage, air sealing and the roof assembly also matter. Ask for an assessment before buying one measure as a guaranteed solution.
