Gemstone Lighting quote checklist: what to ask before signing

Short answer

Ask for the installing dealer's identity, a measured lighting plan, exact system and components, electrical and access scope, setup and testing, a clear installed total and the applicable written warranty. Confirm product registration responsibility and dealer labour/service coverage separately. A brand name and a warranty headline do not describe the whole job.

Gemstone Lighting is often shortlisted for permanent Christmas and year-round roofline lighting. The decision you make, however, is about a particular dealer's proposal for your home—not just the manufacturer's product description.

Gemstone's quote request uses a ZIP or postal code to connect homeowners with an authorized dealer. Use the checklist below to turn that conversation into a written scope you can compare. What's Normal? does not take referral payments; this is an independent quote-reading guide, not a brand endorsement or an installation manual.

1. Confirm the dealer and the measured plan

  • Installing company's business name, contact information and authorized-dealer status.
  • A marked-up photograph or elevation identifying every included roofline section.
  • Measured footage, soffit or mounting details, track colour and profile.
  • Any excluded gables, garage runs, sides or difficult-to-access areas.

Gemstone's installation description discusses measuring linear footage and soffit depth. Ask how the dealer measured your property and whether the quoted length is final. If the scope changes after a site visit, have the updated drawing and price confirmed before approving the work.

2. Identify the operating system, not just the lights

Proposal detailAsk the dealerKeep in writing
Lights and mountingWhich product and track are included, and where will they attach?System identification, coverage and finish.
Controller and powerWhich controller and power components are supplied and where do they go?Component list and agreed locations.
ConnectionsCan existing power be used, or is additional electrical work required?Responsibility and separately priced work.
App and setupWhat account, connectivity and setup does this system need?Included setup and demonstration, with any stated fees.
CompletionHow will the installed runs and controls be tested?Testing, cleanup and handover expectations.

Gemstone publishes Hub2 app and controller information, but a website feature list is not proof of the model in your quote. Ask for a demonstration of the quoted version: colour selection, schedules and everyday operation, including what happens if the home network is unavailable or changed. Confirm features you care about instead of assuming all versions behave the same way.

3. Define installation and approval responsibility

Ask whether mounting, safe access equipment, cable routing, power connections, setup and cleanup are included. Have the dealer identify who checks local permit and electrical requirements, who obtains any necessary approvals and whether additional electrical work is inside the price. A US proposal and a Canadian proposal may be subject to different local requirements.

Also ask how attachment and cable routing will affect the soffit, siding or other surfaces, and who is responsible for correcting installation damage. If you later replace gutters, siding or roofing, find out whom to contact before removing or relocating the system. Do not treat this checklist as permission to alter electrical equipment yourself.

4. Read product and labour coverage separately

Gemstone's warranty page separates products and system parts and describes registration conditions. Its warranty FAQ says manufacturer coverage does not include labour and dealer labour terms vary. Request the current written document for your exact product, installation date and country rather than relying on a remembered warranty headline.

  • Which parts are covered, the term and how any 'lifetime' wording is defined.
  • Who completes required registration, by what deadline, and how you receive proof.
  • Dealer workmanship coverage and the process for reporting a fault.
  • Possible diagnosis, travel, labour or removal/reinstallation charges.
  • Exclusions, transfer conditions and the effect of alterations or later work on the house.

A replacement part and a free visit are different promises

Ask who diagnoses a failure and installs the replacement, and what you might pay even when a part qualifies for coverage. Keep the manufacturer's document and dealer service terms together so neither is mistaken for the other.

5. Send this before signing

A clarification request to the dealer

  1. 1.“Please attach the measured lighting plan, product/component list and installation exclusions.”
  2. 2.“Please confirm the power source, electrical/permit responsibility and what setup and testing include.”
  3. 3.“Please provide the applicable warranty, registration responsibility and dealer labour/service terms.”
  4. 4.“Please show the installed total, taxes, payment milestones and how scope changes require approval.”

Save the approved proposal, final lighting plan, invoice, installation date, warranty and registration confirmation. A clear handoff makes it easier to request service later and to compare this quote with another complete proposal today.

The one thing to remember

Buy a documented installation, not a brand headline

The dealer's measured plan, complete scope and written service terms turn a product you like into a purchase you can evaluate.

Common questions

Does Gemstone's manufacturer warranty include labour?

Its official warranty FAQ distinguishes manufacturer coverage from dealer labour coverage. Ask for your dealer's written labour and service terms, including possible on-site fees, alongside the applicable product warranty.

Should I ask which controller is included?

Yes. Identify the controller and app version and ask the dealer to demonstrate the features you expect. A current website feature list is not a specification for every installation.

Do I need to register the warranty myself?

Ask who completes the applicable registration requirements and by what deadline. Keep confirmation rather than assuming the dealer or manufacturer completed it automatically.
