Quote checklist: what a quote must say before you sign

You can't judge a price you can't read. Pick your trade, then tick off what your document actually states. Whatever's left unticked is the email you should send before you sign — and this page writes it for you.

• Labour

  My document states: states flat rate per task, or hourly rate plus estimated hours.

  Not good enough: 'Labour included'

• Parts

  My document states: named fixtures with model numbers.

  Not good enough: 'Parts and materials'

• Access

  My document states: says whether wall/floor opening and patching are included.

  Not good enough: Silent — becomes a change order later

• Fees

  My document states: trip charge and permit shown as lines, at cost or marked up.

  Not good enough: A percentage 'misc' line

• Warranty

  My document states: separate terms for parts and for labour.

  Not good enough: 'Guaranteed'
