Whole-home standby generator installation cost
Short answer
Generac publishes US$8,000–$16,000 for home standby-generator installation including the generator itself. Quebec contractor Lagacé Électrique posts C$14,000–$26,000 for complete residential installations in its 2026 guide. These are attributed planning references, not equivalent national quotes. Actual cost depends on the supported loads, equipment, transfer switch, fuel connection, placement and site work.
A generator advertised with a low equipment price may still need a transfer switch, electrical work, fuel supply, a base and approvals. Compare the complete functioning system rather than a box price against a turnkey quote.
Whole-home is not a precise electrical specification. A system that manages large loads is different from one sized to run every appliance simultaneously. This guide is educational, not electrical design, installation instructions or a guarantee of uninterrupted power.
1. Published installed prices in the US and Canada
| Reference | Published installed amount | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| US: Generac installation guidance | US$8,000–$16,000 including generator | Manufacturer's broad average range. Location and installation complexity change the dealer's quote. |
| Canada: Lagacé Électrique, Quebec, 2026 | C$14,000–$26,000 complete residential | Regional contractor estimate. Confirm the written scope and taxes rather than assuming a Canada-wide all-in price. |
| Quebec source: 14 kW example | C$14,000–$16,000 complete installation | Described for essential loads. A capacity label alone does not establish compatibility with your home. |
| Quebec source: 20–26 kW example | C$18,000–$26,000 | Source's larger residential example; actual heating and other loads need assessment. |
Do not add a separate electrical-work estimate to an installed package if that work is already included. Likewise, a generator and switch bundle is not automatically an installed total. Ask for tax, financing and potential rebates to be shown separately; no incentive or credit amount is promised here.
2. Essential circuits vs. whole-home backup
Have the installer document which loads the system supports, how they are started or managed, and what remains unavailable. Electric heat, air conditioning, well pumps, cooking and EV charging can materially change the proposed system. Do not select capacity from floor area alone or assume every 22 kW unit will power every home.
- Exact generator model, fuel, rated output and compatible transfer switch.
- Load assessment and a written list of backed-up circuits or whole-service arrangement.
- Any load-management modules, restrictions or large-load shedding during an outage.
- Starting requirements for motors and pumps, not just a sum of appliance labels.
- How operation will be demonstrated at handoff and what the owner must maintain.
3. What a complete installation quote should include
| Line item | What to confirm | Possible extra scope |
|---|---|---|
| Site and base | Approved location, stable base, delivery and placement | Restricted access, excavation, drainage or landscape restoration. |
| Electrical and transfer | Transfer switch, wiring, load management and connections | Panel/service changes, long cable runs or additional managed loads. |
| Fuel supply | Natural-gas or propane connection and required capacity | Long runs, regulator work, utility changes or propane tank arrangements. |
| Approvals and startup | Local permits, inspection, commissioning and owner handoff | Excluded fees, repeat visits or unresolved inspection work. |
Ask who coordinates electrical, fuel and approval work. Generac identifies site preparation, gas-line preparation, permitting and dealer availability as timing factors. A delivery date is not necessarily the date backup power will be ready.
4. Placement and electrical safety are not DIY shortcuts
Use the exact standby model's placement requirements
Have qualified installers follow the manufacturer's installation instructions and applicable local rules for clearances, exhaust, openings and air intakes. Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority discusses Licensed Electrical Contractors and permit requirements for generator work; requirements elsewhere must be confirmed locally. Never improvise a connection through a household outlet.
Standby generators and portable generators are different installations. Do not copy a portable-generator distance into a standby specification or treat the equipment as safe indoors. Arrange an appropriate transfer system and working carbon-monoxide alarms; do not operate engine-powered equipment in a home or garage.
5. Fuel, maintenance and the real ownership budget
Fuel cost depends on the exact model, load, fuel type, local rate and run time. Request the model's fuel consumption at stated loads, then multiply by the applicable fuel price and expected hours. This is an estimate, not a fixed per-hour promise; propane delivery and utility tariff terms can matter.
- Scheduled exercise cycles and outage fuel use, with assumptions shown separately.
- Manufacturer-required maintenance, service call charges and consumables.
- Battery, parts and labour warranty coverage and how emergency support is arranged.
- Optional monitoring subscriptions, fuel storage and other recurring costs.
A comparable standby-generator quote request
- 1.“Please quote the exact generator, transfer switch and supported loads, including any load management.”
- 2.“Please itemize fuel work, base, electrical work, approvals, startup, tax and exclusions as one complete installed scope.”
- 3.“What site or utility change could add cost, and how will it be approved before extra work?”
- 4.“Please provide model-specific fuel-use assumptions, maintenance requirements, service pricing and warranty terms.”
The one thing to remember
Compare delivered backup power, not advertised kilowatts
The fair comparison is the same supported loads, safe installation scope and ownership obligations. A lower equipment price does not establish a lower complete project price.

Common questions
How much does a whole-home standby generator cost installed?
Generac publishes US$8,000–$16,000 including the unit; the cited Quebec contractor gives C$14,000–$26,000 complete residential examples. Use those as source-specific references and obtain a site-based load and installation quote.
Will a 22 kW generator power my whole house?
Not necessarily all loads at once. Fuel rating, starting loads, heating equipment and load management matter. Ask the installer to document what operates during an outage and what is shed or excluded.
Does the generator price include a transfer switch and gas line?
A complete quote may include them, but an equipment price or bundle may not include installation. Confirm switch, wiring, gas work, base, permits and startup explicitly.
What does a standby generator cost to run per hour?
There is no universal rate. Use the exact model's consumption at an identified load and your local fuel price, and budget maintenance separately. Ask the dealer to show the assumptions.
