What's Normal? vs. Angi and HomeAdvisor: check a price or find a pro?
Short answer
Use What's Normal? when you already have a bill or quote and want help understanding it. Use Angi or HomeAdvisor when you want to find or contact home-service providers. They can complement each other: finding a contractor and assessing that contractor's written quote are different tasks.
If you are looking for an Angi or HomeAdvisor alternative, first decide what you want to replace. A document assessment may help you question an existing price, but it cannot supply a contractor to complete the work. A provider marketplace can help you obtain quotes, but choosing a provider still requires reviewing the scope and terms.
This comparison is published by What's Normal?, not an independent testing organization. We acknowledge the other services' strengths and do not claim better accuracy, cheaper contractors or guaranteed savings. What's Normal? never accepts payment for referrals from contractors, insurers, repair shops or other providers.
The main differences at a glance
| Question | What's Normal? | Angi / HomeAdvisor |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main task? | Assess a bill, estimate or quote you already have. | Find, research, contact or book home-service providers. |
| What do I provide? | A document or pasted text, with relevant context. | Project and location details through the applicable service flow. |
| What do I get? | An educational assessment, observations and questions; detail depends on the input. | Provider discovery or connections, with booking or quote options depending on the service. |
| When is it useful? | Before approving a quoted price or questioning a bill. | When you need someone to quote or perform the work. |
Where Angi and HomeAdvisor are useful
Angi's official consumer pages describe researching and hiring pros, reviews, requesting quotes and instant booking with upfront pricing for some services. HomeAdvisor describes matching homeowners with local pros who may contact them, and offers its True Cost Guide. These can help when you need a starting point for finding a provider or gathering another estimate.
Do not assume all projects have instant booking, a fixed price or the same number of available providers. Check the current flow for your service and location. Whatever discovery method you use, confirm qualifications relevant to your jurisdiction, the proposed scope, payment terms and warranty before agreeing.
Where a document checker fits
What's Normal? focuses on the price already in front of you. You can submit a photo, PDF or pasted text and receive an assessment that can identify unusual lines, missing scope and useful questions. It covers bills and quotes beyond home services, including automotive and dental categories described on our site.
It does not find a contractor, inspect the work or diagnose a car or dental condition. Its estimate can be wrong or incomplete, especially when the document lacks location or scope details. Confirm findings with the provider and use professional advice when the decision needs it.
How the business models differ
What's Normal? offers checks and paid plans, with two free checks per account. We never accept provider referral payments. Angi's FAQ describes pro profiles and paid advertising options; HomeAdvisor's pro page describes paid leads with costs varying by job type and region. Those disclosures explain different commercial models, not the quality of an individual provider.
A business model is not proof of bias in a particular result
Do not assume every listing or match is paid placement, or that a commercial platform's contractors are unreliable. Equally, our no-referral-payment policy is not a guarantee that an automated assessment is correct. Judge the evidence and disclosed terms.
What about Thumbtack?
Thumbtack is another route to search for service providers. Its help pages describe general pro search and optional On-Demand bookings with a set price and schedule for eligible services. Like the Angi/HomeAdvisor comparison, provider discovery is a different task from checking an existing document. Availability and booking terms should be checked for your actual project.
Which should you use next?
I need a contractor
A provider marketplace, local recommendations or another verified source of qualified pros can help you seek written quotes. A document checker alone does not solve hiring.
I already have a quote
Read the scope and exclusions, use our guides or a document assessment to identify questions, and seek a comparable written quote where useful.
I have a bill I do not understand
Start with the agreement, itemization and payment history. Ask the issuer about a specific discrepancy; an automated flag is not a finding of wrongdoing.
After obtaining another quote
- 1.“Please confirm that your price covers the same materials, work and finished result as the other estimate.”
- 2.“Which permits, removal, disposal and restoration are included or excluded?”
- 3.“What could change the price, and how will extra work be approved?”
- 4.“Please explain any difference in scope before I compare the totals.”
The one thing to remember
Finding a pro and checking a quote are complementary
Choose by your next decision, not by treating every service with pricing information as the same product.
Want a second set of eyes on it?
Upload a photo or PDF of the bill or quote, or paste the text. You'll get a plain-English assessment of whether the price looks normal, what stands out, and what to ask next.
Common questions
Is What's Normal? an Angi alternative?
For understanding a bill or quote, it offers a different next step. It is not a substitute for Angi's provider discovery or booking services because it does not supply contractors.
Can I check a quote from a contractor I found on HomeAdvisor?
You can submit a quote you hold, regardless of how you found the provider. The assessment remains an educational estimate, and missing scope can limit its usefulness.
Does What's Normal? take referral payments?
No. What's Normal? never accepts payment for referrals from contractors, insurers, repair shops or other providers. It offers paid checks and plans rather than provider referrals.
Which service guarantees the lowest price?
This comparison does not establish a lowest-price guarantee for any service. Compare actual written scopes, local availability and current terms rather than assuming a platform determines the final cost.
